The Hikers

As stated in the design-development report for Expedition Health from October 2007, “There is arguably no more powerful way to reflect on the biological principles of health than to see the intricacies of human anatomy beneath the skin.”

“The Hikers,” currently on display in the popular exhibition Expedition Health, were the first full-body plastinates put on permanent exhibition in the United States. They were specifically made for the Museum by Gunther von Hagens and his Institute for Plastination in Germany. Dissected in ways that showcase everything from the spinal cord to the plantar fascia, the  specimen allows Museum guests to understand their own bodies in a realistic and relatable way.
